OSU Chemistry General Information

The Department of Chemistry provides curricula for the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degree. By any measure one may apply, Chemistry is one of the strongest academic programs at O.S.U. and in the state of Ohio. Ohio State leads the country in education and research because of our vast resources, cutting-edge facilities, and outstanding faculty. Consequently, we are consistently ranked as one of the best in the nation by the National Research Council and others. Our faculty members include members of the National Academy of Sciences, Ohio Eminent Scholars, Sloan Fellows, Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar awardees, and fellows of the American Physical Society, the American Ceramic Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Several faculty hold major national awards from the American Chemical Society and have distinguished themselves numerous times with research.

The State of Ohio and the University have awarded the Department funds as a Center of Excellence and for two Ohio Eminent Scholars. In addition, funds from national agencies and industries average about 9 million dollars annually. Ohio State ranks eighth in the nation, first in the Big Ten, and first in the entire Midwest in federal funding of chemistry projects.

Preparing for a Career in Chemistry

Although chemistry is one of the most demanding disciplines, our curriculum provides you with the flexibility required for developments in a variety of rapidly expanding sciences. A strong math background, as well as courses in other physical and biological sciences, are required to provide the foundation needed for the changes anticipated in the future.

In addition to specific course requirements and electives, each chemistry major may elect to undertake research projects with the faculty. Our research laboratories and equipment are among the best in the nation as a result of major funding to the Department from University, State, and Federal agencies. Your research will be done in well-equipped laboratories along with graduate students who will provide you with extensive "know how".

Will I Receive Quality Instruction?

In addition to excellence in research, the Department has a long tradition that all its faculty share in the responsibility of teaching the undergraduate courses. The courses are exciting because our faculty are actively involved in current research of this rapidly moving science. The quality of the teaching is reflected by the eight OSU Alumni Distinguished Teaching Awards and seven Teaching Awards of the Colleges of the Arts and Sciences received by faculty in the Department. The quality of the instructional facilities continues to improve each year with new and remodeled buildings for teaching and research. These include a new building for undergraduate laboratories, a new wing on Evans Lab, and the scheduled total renovation of McPherson Lab.

What Type of Chemist Will I Be?

The faculty is engaged in a broad range of educational and research activities in the areas of analytical, biological, inorganic, organic, physical, and theoretical chemistry. Your program is designed to allow you to pursue a career in any of these areas or further studies in graduate school. The number and variety of courses available to you are among the advantages to students enrolled at O.S.U.

What Happens After I Get My Degree?

B.S. Chemistry majors may be employed in the large and complex chemical industry which spans agriculture, food products, plastics, pharmaceutical chemicals, and petroleum. The B.A. chemistry major provides our graduates with excellent credentials for admission to professional schools such as dentistry, medicine, optometry, and veterinary medicine. The B.A. degree may also be followed by a career in areas such as business, education, and law. Advanced training in graduate school leading to a M.S. or Ph.D. degree is recommended to increase the opportunities for employment in industry as well as teaching at the College and University level. Your training in the Department of Chemistry will enable you to obtain scholarships to finance completely your studies in graduate school as well as provide a salary.

How Do I Find a Job?

Representatives from all major chemical industries visit campus and actively recruit our undergraduate and graduate students. Many of them are graduates of this Department. Personnel in the Career Services Office for the Colleges of the Arts and Sciences will provide you with career information and counseling and will arrange job interviews. The continuous contact between our faculty and industrial representatives provides our students with early information about job opportunities.
